I came to kill the man who wiped out my house.
The last to die by his hand was my younger sibling.
The black dragon's bonded rider, Kairon.
I leveled my dagger at his heart.
His black combat gear was soaked with blood and rain, clinging to his body. Beneath his wet black hair, gold eyes shone like a beast's, and on the chest bared between his open collar a black dragon pattern writhed as if it were alive.
He was dangerously beautiful.
I wanted to kill him, and I could not take my eyes off him.
"Do it."
Kairon smiled with bloodied lips.
"But if I die, you die too."
In that moment a black sigil surfaced on my wrist.
The black dragon's mark. The second bonded rider.
My breath stopped.
My enemy and I had been chosen by the same dragon.
As the ceiling came down, Kairon yanked me against him by the waist. Hot breath grazed my ear.
"If you want to kill me, stay alive."
His gold eyes looked down at me like they would swallow me whole.
"Because now you are not my enemy, but a woman tied to the same fate as me."
