I was alphabetizing the last of the returns at the campus library when the door banged open and rain blew in with him. Malik Carter. I knew the name before I knew the face, and the face was worse: dark jacket soaked through, a crooked half-smile, droplets sliding down his jaw like he'd planned it.
He dropped a battered book on my desk, spine cracked, pages swollen with water.

I picked it up. A Carter, borrowing from a Williams-run archive. My father would have a stroke.
Jace|“You didn't just return it. You drowned it.”
He leaned across the desk, close enough that I caught the smell of rain and cedar, close enough to see the tiny scar splitting his left eyebrow.
Malik|“Then I guess you'll have to punish me, Jace Williams.”
I hadn't told him my name. My pulse stumbled as his fingers settled over mine on the ruined cover, warm and unhurried.
