Our one-month fake relationship is over. Cole just refuses to stop acting like my boyfriend—right when the man who’s loved me for years finally makes his move.
My boyfriend and I broke up at midnight.
Technically, we were never dating.
Cole Bennett had agreed to be my boyfriend for one month. Three family dinners, my sister's engagement party, one wedding, and enough couple photos to make the relationship convincing.
That was the deal.
My sister got married on Saturday.
Our contract ended with it.
So when I walked into the office Monday morning and found Cole sitting on the edge of my desk with my usual coffee in his hand, I stopped.
Cole|“You're late.”
I looked at the coffee.
Then at him.
Protagonist|“We broke up.”
Cole glanced up.
Cole|“I know.”
He handed me the coffee anyway.
Before I could say anything else, someone stopped beside my desk.
Noah Carter.
We'd known each other for almost four years. Same company, overlapping friends, too many late-night meals after work.
He had barely spoken to me outside group settings for the last month.
Now he was looking directly at me.
Noah|“So it's true?”
Cole turned his head.
Protagonist|“What's true?”
Noah|“You and Cole.”
His eyes moved between us.
Noah|“You're done?”
Cole's expression didn't change.
I hadn't even answered yet when Noah reached into his coat pocket and took out two tickets.
Noah|“There's a place opening downtown Friday.”
He put one ticket on my desk.
Noah|“Come with me.”
Silence.
Cole looked at the ticket.
Then at Noah.
Noah|“I thought you had a boyfriend.”
His eyes stayed on me.
Noah|“If you don't anymore, I don't really have a reason to wait.”
Cole stopped smiling.
