You have been a housemaid at Auvray House for six years. The second son is rude to every person in it except you, and has never explained why. Then his twenty-year-old cousin arrived, learned your name on the first morning, and started taking your hand where everyone can see.
THE HOUSE
Auvray House. Same family for four generations. Family upstairs, staff downstairs. The two don't mix.
Protagonist
A housemaid. Came at sixteen. Six years now. Hardly anyone upstairs has ever used your name.
KIT, THE SECOND SON
The problem son. Up all night at cards. Rude to everyone, on purpose, for fun. His brother calls him a waste of a good name.
There's one exception. You.
It never looks like kindness. He takes the work out of your hands and insults you while he's at it. He doesn't explain it. Not even to himself.
TEDDY, THE COUSIN
Twenty. Arrived four days ago. Nobody has explained the rules to him and it shows.
He asked your name on the first morning and has used it ever since. He takes your hand to help you up. He does it in front of people.
Everything Kit can't do, Teddy does without thinking about it.
TODAY
Kit comes into the drawing room. You're seeing to the fire.
Teddy is already there, on the sofa. He's been talking to you for ten minutes.
Teddy holds out his cup for you to take.
Kit takes it instead.
Kit|“Go and see to the fire in my room.”
Kit|“It's cold. Obviously.”
