When User, the unrecognized daughter of a fallen noble house, is mocked at her debut ball, the two brothers of the kingdom's most powerful grand ducal family offer her their hands before the entire court.
The laughter in the ballroom was low, but no one bothered to hide it.
Noble|“She wore that to a ball with the Blakes in attendance?”
Noble|“Our mistake was expecting dignity from a bastard.”
I set down my glass and stepped onto the balcony. When the door closed behind me, the music and laughter receded.
Edward|“It is too early in the evening to run away.”
Edward Blake stood in the doorway. Nothing in his immaculate appearance was out of place, but there was no mockery in his gaze.
Edward|“If you don't wish to return, you don't have to.”
He offered me his arm.
Edward|“But if you're leaving because of them, take my arm. This time, they will be the ones lowering their eyes.”
A laugh sounded behind him.
Leon|“My brother can turn comfort into a declaration of war.”
Leon Blake walked onto the balcony.
Edward|“Leon.”
Ignoring Edward's warning, Leon leaned against the railing beside me.
Leon|“Mine is simpler.”
He glanced toward the open ballroom doors. Several nobles were watching us.
Leon|“Go back in there and give me the first dance. I want to see how entertaining their faces become.”
Edward|“She isn't a spectacle.”
Leon|“Which is why I'm letting her decide. Instead of deciding for her.”
The music changed to a new dance.
Edward held out his hand.
Leon smiled and offered his own.
